Monte Baldo

Our own Alps, cows with bells and paragliding
Before it became a mountain suitable for 'human' tourists, Monte Baldo was chosen by thousands of 'wild' visitors, since it managed not to freeze in the Great Ice Age. First references of herbalists studying the slope can be found already in the records of the sixteenth century, and even today naturalists find something here to work with. But we're here to have rest and fun!

In order to discover Monte Baldo inside out, one needs to try everything: walking, mountain biking, paragliding, you name it. And if you are not keen on sports, climb the top of the mountain to admire the lake from a height of 1760 meters, listen to the bells ringing on the necks of the local horned beauties and buy warm socks made from alpaca wool.

Monte Baldo: seasons

The cows, who graze grass in the mountains the whole summer, are brought down into the valley in September, which is essentially a local holiday. No one misses a chance to see the procession, eat polenta and dance. Thankfully, tourists are no cows and nobody drags them down: Baldo offers peaceful walks in the autumn and skiing in the winter.
Dasha and her family once told us at a breakfast that it is profitable to ski in Baldo: you pay 15 euro for a cable car and that's all, you don't need any ski passes; to rent equipment costs 10 euro per day. All in all, there are five skiing pistes, the lifts are platter pulls. The pistes are simple, which is good for the beginners. Italians are friendly; you will hear Bravissimo and Ciao bella everywhere. What is even more important, when you ski down the slope you change winter to spring.

The ski season closes in February, but the snow still remains here and there until April. Comfortable warm shoes and a hat are highly recommended. I remember my first cable car ride at the end of April: I had elegant pumps from which woolen socks were sticking out – I had to forget about good looks, as I was striving not to freeze to death.

Still, the most 'wow' season in Monte Baldo is summer, of course.
